Doka System Formwork vs. Timber Formwork: A Procurement Manager's Cost Breakdown

Here's the thing: if you're in concrete construction, formwork is never the most exciting line item. It's also the one that decides whether you hit your pour schedule or spend a week explaining why you didn't.

I'm a procurement manager at a 140-person structural concrete contractor. I've managed our formwork budget — roughly $2.1M per year — for six years. Timber formwork looks cheap on day one. For a 2,800 m² wall package in 2024, I had two quotes side by side: $18,200 for site-built timber materials and $27,400 for a Doka panel system. The Doka quote was 50% higher. A project manager on a tight cashflow budget would easily choose timber.

But that's not the full picture.

Honestly, I'm not sure why some crews still prefer timber on repetitive walls. My best guess is habit and the ability to fix things on the fly. Timber is forgiving if you're always improvising. The counterintuitive part

After six years, the biggest cost driver in formwork is not the material. It's the labor, the rework, and the schedule risk wrapped around the material. A 'cheaper' panel that slows down the crew is not cheaper. A more expensive system that cuts cycle time and produces a cleaner surface can be the better financial decision.

The cheapest formwork is the one you're still fighting when the concrete truck arrives.

What clients actually see

There's another dimension that doesn't show up in a standard cost comparison: client perception. Doka panels leave a smooth, uniform concrete surface. On architectural concrete, that finish is your brand. The same crew that looks average with timber formwork can look genuinely professional with a system that fits properly.

When we switched to Doka system formwork on a series of exposed concrete walls in Q3 2024, the client's satisfaction survey score for finish quality jumped 23% compared with the previous quarter. Should you buy Doka system formwork? It depends.

Buying Doka makes sense if:

  • Your projects have repetitive elements, so the system doesn't sit idle.
  • Finish quality matters to your clients, and you want fewer surface defects.
  • You can manage the accessory inventory and train your crew on the system.

Renting Doka or using timber may make more sense if:

  • The job is a one-off with unusual geometry that won't repeat.
  • Your crew isn't trained on system formwork and the schedule is too tight for a learning curve.
  • Cashflow is the deciding factor, and you can't wait to recover the investment through reuse.

If you're on the fence, run a mini-TCO analysis before the next bid. Ask your Doka representative for a quote with a full Doka formwork material list, then compare it against your own cost history. The answer will usually be clear.
