In March 2024, I stood on a residential high-rise deck at 11 p.m. and watched a crew strip timber formwork from a 9-story core wall pour. They had saved about $22,000 on materials by using a local framing package instead of a Doka formwork system. Then the story changed. The spent timber was too swollen to reuse. The re-shoring layout had to be re-engineered twice. The delay ate the savings in four days.
I'm not saying that happens on every job. I've built quite a lot of solid timber falsework in my career. But if you're comparing Doka formwork systems to conventional timber formwork, you need to compare the right numbers. I've spent 12 years coordinating formwork logistics, including emergency deliveries and last-minute substitutions, and here's the comparison framework that has actually held up.
What You're Really Comparing
When most contractors say 'Doka is expensive,' they're looking at rental rates and purchase prices. That's the starting point, not the answer. The real comparison has three dimensions:
- Labor productivity: how many square meters per person-hour each system actually gives you
- Schedule reliability: how each system behaves under delays, errors, and rework
- Geometric flexibility: when a field-built solution can compress time better than a factory system
If you ignore the first two, you're not comparing formwork. You're comparing catalogs.
Dimension 1: Upfront price vs labor cost
On one recent project, we had two identical 1,400 m² podium slabs on consecutive floors. The contractor used conventional timber shoring on the first floor and a Doka system on the second. The material cost for the timber falsework was about 30% lower than the Doka rental. But the total installed cost was not.
Here's what happened. The timber crew needed four extra carpenters and two extra days to cut, brace, and strip. The Doka-trained crew used half the labor for the same area. When you add re-shoring labor and the cost of replacing ruined timber, the Doka system landed within 4% of the timber price—and it was on a shorter schedule. I'm not 100% sure those exact numbers hold in every market, but the pattern is consistent.
The timber solution was cheaper. The project wasn't. In another case, the budget formwork choice saved $10,000 on material and cost $26,000 in schedule compression when the slab pour slipped. That's the classic penny-wise dynamic on every construction site I know.
Dimension 2: Delivery, cycle time, and resource risk
This is where the emergency specialist part of my job comes in. Lost hours on a construction schedule are never recovered. A formwork system that arrives complete, engineered, and pre-shored will almost always be faster to erect than field-built timber—regardless of material prices.
Doka formwork systems have one crucial advantage: predictability. Components are marked, engineered, and rated. Your site team knows that an H20 beam has the same capacity today as it did two months ago. With timber, you need to check warping, splitting, and reuse damage. That adds hours and adds risk.
I once coordinated an emergency replacement for a knock-down shoring order with only 36 hours until a 480 m³ voided-slab pour. The original order was a mix of generic props and loose timber. It didn't match the drawings. We rented a Doka shoring system, dropped it on site at 6 a.m., and poured at 11 a.m. the next day. That pour had a $50,000 delay penalty attached. The rush fee for the system was $6,500. It was the easiest cost decision I've made.
Does that mean Doka never misses a lead time? No. A system is only as good as the supplier's logistics. But the failure mode is different. A missing Doka frame is a specific, orderable part. Missing timber means finding a new lumberyard, checking moisture content, and hoping your crew can make it work.
Design standards don't eliminate field risk; they expose it. Both ACI 347R-14 and EN 12812 require formwork and falsework to be designed for actual loads. Engineered systems come with those calculations. Timber falsework often needs a local engineer to seal the drawing, which adds another potential bottleneck.
Dimension 3: Flexibility, and the case for timber
This is the part I wouldn't have believed at the start of my career. Given my background with system formwork, I expected Doka to dominate in every comparison. It doesn't. And pretending otherwise will cost you money.
For repetitive floor slabs, walls, columns, and staged pours, Doka formwork systems are hard to beat. The cycle time alone justifies the rental. But for custom architectural shapes—curved walls, irregular stair cores, one-off foundation details—field-built timber can be faster and cheaper. You don't need a heavy-duty engineered frame to form a five-meter curved planter wall. You need a good carpenter.
Last year, we did a luxury residence with an elliptical wall and an exposed concrete finish. A system formwork solution would have required custom panels and a six-week lead time. The timber solution took one week, used standard plywood and local pine, and got the finish approved. It wasn't cheaper if you amortized the engineering across one project. But for one pour, it was the rational choice.
To be fair, timber formwork is more forgiving for unusual geometry. The surprise is real: the 'expensive' option can be cheaper overall, and the 'cheap' option can be more expensive—but only in the right conditions.
What should you choose?
Here's my rule of thumb, after 12 years and 40+ emergency formwork calls. Part of me wants to standardize to Doka for every job. Another part still thinks about that elliptical wall and the carpenter who made it look easy. I've learned to let the schedule and geometry decide, not brand loyalty.
- Choose a Doka system for projects with three or more reuses, tight schedules, exposed-concrete requirements, or a shortage of skilled carpenters.
- Choose timber formwork for one-off geometries, small pours, site-built details, or when lumber can be sourced locally without delay.
- Consider renting a system even if you wouldn't buy one. Rental moves a lot of the total cost risk.
This is not a 'buy Doka' conclusion. It's a 'count all your costs' conclusion. If a project has multiple identical slab cycles or high wall pours, the Doka solution tends to win on speed and labor. If it's a custom architectural feature, I'd still call a good carpenter before ordering a bespoke formwork system.
The cheapest first cost is often the most expensive installed cost. That's not an opinion. It's arithmetic.
